5 Mistakes to Avoid when Fighting a Ticket

from Beat That Parking Ticket:

You definitely don’t want to do the following:

  • Forget to ask the judge to check for technical defects

They’re supposed to check on their own – but they’ll look closer if you ask.

  • Not know the law

Telling the judge you were really 10 feet away from the hydrant and thinking you’ll win is a sad example of not realizing that the law requires a distance of 15 feet.

  • Use an excuse that has no chance of flying

Beat That Parking Ticket has examples aplenty of these. Starting with the classic “I didn’t do it” defense or “I have no money” plea.

  • Mail in your defense when it hinges on your credibility

If you’re trying to persuade a judge and you have only your word to do it, go to a live hearing and answer their skeptical questions.

  • Curse out the judge, the system, the mayor or members of any minority

It shouldn’t matter, but judges are human and don’t like obscenities yelled at them any more than you would.
